It's a new school with a very old idea. Tucked away here in Bay Center, Washington is an art school hatched with an idea that is centuries old. In the 1500's they were called "Ateliers". An atelier is the private studio of a practicing painter, who dedicates part of his time to teaching a limited number of students. The atelier tradition evolved from the apprenticeship system of the Renaissance, and became very successful, especially in the nineteenth century. Drawing and painting techniques were taught through rigorous exercises till the technique was mastered then moving on to the next level of mastery.
In 2008 through 2009 Janeen was director of a private art school in Bellevue, Washington with an enrollment of 250 students. After 30 years of fine arts and classroom experience Janeen decided to open her studio for classes in the fall of 2009 with the idea of teaching beginners through advanced students with small classes. A four-to-one student to teacher ratio is typically what you'll find at Schissler Studio. Small class size allows for more one-on-one teaching and the students work at their own pace through the different levels from a curriculum that Janeen has developed.
"My goal is to give my students a good, solid foundation in art fundamentals. It is key to the success and enjoyment of every student who wants to create art in any medium."
